[After Shigeo went home the next morning, their routine settled - their report seemed to get received even if the tone of the authorities was dubious, but time was passing and it let things settle back to calm on their own.
Peaceful weeks turn into peaceful months, letting the two of them continue working at Spirits & Such to help those afflicted with curses or sore shoulders. Shigeo's learning well to not actually tell customers that they aren't cursed, and to let Reigen handle those. He doesn't bring up the kidnapping, he doesn't bring up the night he stayed over, he doesn't bring up the kiss - he just lets Reigen get as handsy as he want most of the time, and lets the man know when he needs his space.
Business is going surprisingly well, though. And today he's a bit pleased, after reviewing their finances and schedule.]
[ today reigen has it in his head to finally put their in-office posters, the ones with the pricing tiers and the big one with his own face, in frames. he’s bent over the center table sliding one into a frame right now, so he doesn’t look up yet as he says, ]
That’s a little pessimistic, don’t you think? We could still get walk-ins ...
[ but as far as protests go, it’s not much of one. it is a nice day outside, reigen reflects, and they’ve been working pretty hard lately. a day off won’t kill them.
[Shigeo offers a coupon! A table for two at a nice yakiniku spot, all-you-can-eat. It's expensive, even with the coupon... probably because it's near that nice beach area.]
[ reigen pulls a face briefly at the mention of odd jobs. he’s alluded in the past to how he doesn’t like the idea that mob would feel like he has to do extra work, when this business should ostensibly provide for them both--
to celebrate us doing well, though. naturally, he’s talking about the business, right? not ... them. but they’ve, uh, also been doing well. reigen’s pretty sure, anyway. reigen, his usual amount of intrusive, hands-on, annoying; mob continuing to accept it all with patience and grace. and there’d been that kiss, stupid idea though it was, just two months ago. so far it hadn’t felt like anything reigen had to apologize for. ]
... r-right. I guess things have been ... pretty good lately.
[ as he says the words out loud he knows they’re true in more ways than one. he glances out the window, nerves fluttering, and then he looks back at mob. he swallows slightly. ]
Uh. Yeah. Sure! Let’s ... take the day off. Together. Let’s do that. [ together? like ... together together? god. ]
[ that sounds like a date, is what it sounds like. when was the last time reigen had gone out on a date? it’s been literally years. he and mob go out to eat after jobs all the time, but those weren’t dates, not really; at first he’d been trying to get to know his new accidental co-conspirator, and then slowly it’d started feeling like an odd habit, a way for both of them to pass the time in good company ... they were two kind of lonely guys to begin with, and it’d been easier than abrupt goodbyes at the bus station, or having to walk home alone ...
reigen’s just never been that interested in dating. he could never see it going well, for himself or anyone else. but. yakuniku, a walk on the beach with mob. that’s--there’s just no way that won’t be fun. it actually sounds-- ]
... n-nice. [ GOD REIGEN, GET IT TOGETHER ] Yeah. Let’s, uh. Let’s get going, then! Don’t wanna get caught up in the business lunch crowd, right? [ broken brain fax machine go whirrrrrr ]
[The fax machine could run and go wild as far as Shigeo was concerned. Getting his light jacket on, Shigeo turned the sign to closed and turned off the office lights.]
[ it seems like a weird question, until he realizes that his answer matters--that mob went out of his way, that mob isn’t always good at reading a room or at least hesitates to assume he knows the score.
he’s straightening out his own jacket, checking his hair for a second in the reflection of the frame--god, if he’d known they were gonna do this he would’ve tidied up a little more. he looks up and--smiles at mob, helpless, sincere. the handsomeness of him catches reigen off-guard now and then. really, what were the kageyamas thinking, putting him on the marriage market? he would’ve been fine on his own. ]
... yeah. [ jeez reigen how many times can you say “yeah” in under five minutes ] I am. Very. Actually.
[Good! Good. He was glad he made the right call. He held the door for Reigen.]
After you.
[Just a pleasant train ride away was their date! Shigeo wanted to hold Reigen's hand as they walked, but.... well... they were grown men, that wouldn't be very appropriate, would it? He'll keep to himself on the ride, just enjoying his fiance's company until they arrived at their stop and got their first whiff of the salty sea air.]
It's not too hot today.
[Good! They wouldn't be sweltering when going to lunch.]
[ the only clouds overhead are feathery wisps, unobtrusive in an otherwise brilliantly blue sky. there’s a breeze. reigen keeps his hands in his pockets, stealing a furtive glance sideways at mob. ]
If I get too warm, I can take it off without issue. ...We should've considered different shoes, but that's okay.
[Impulsive! His turn to be a little impulsive. Looking at the map he had on his flip phone, Shigeo figured out what direction their destination was from the stop.]
Just a block that way. Hopefully there's not much of a wait, but waiting won't be too bad on a day like this.
[He could stare at that sky all day long if he wanted.]
No, not at all. And hey, maybe we can get ice cream after too.
[ not only is it gonna feel pretty good during a warm late spring day, it’s also ... ice cream with a ... well. with his fiance. that’s pretty cute. they’re in their twenties, this shouldn’t feel as novel as it does. ]
Walk off the food, then get more food. Those are the makings of a great day.
Oh, speaking of. Did you ever ... [ he falters briefly, because they really haven’t talked about claw since reigen filed the police report. but hell, it doesn’t matter now; he pushes on: ] Did you tell your brother about those Claw weirdos? If anyone else in your family has psychic powers, they’d probably wanna know too, right?
I guess a guy like that doesn’t have a lot of use for powers in his everyday life.
[ they’ve only run into each other a few times, on ritsu’s breaks, and ritsu had been ... chilly, to say the least. both brothers have a lot going on under the surface. if mob has a storm somewhere deep inside him, ritsu has one too, entirely behind his eyes. ]
That sucks. Makes sense, though. If only the cops were the type to get back to civilians ... Still, if it’s been this quiet, you should be able to see him again in no time.
[ at the restaurant, the hostess cheerfully looks over their voucher and lets them know it’ll be a fifteen-minute wait. not bad at all. they step back outside together, amid a small cluster of other waiting couples. ]
Hey, maybe I can come with you next time. That’d be fun, right?
[Shigeo took that to mean Ritsu wanted to get to know Arataka a little better, not as Ritsu probably meant, which was trying to dig into Reigen's history to discover his intentions...]
I'm glad you two are getting along.
[He never saw Ritsu fighting, so it was obviously fine, right?]
That we are. Getting along, that is. We’ll be buddies in no time.
[ they probably will not. still, not really a problem, right? they’re not ... they’re not really gonna get married, so ...
he doesn’t really want to think about the future like that, though. some more couples step in behind them to talk to the hostess; he steps into mob’s space to make room and reaches up to fuss over his jacket lapels. ]
[Reigen's hands can never sit still, can they? It's something Shigeo's noticed about his fiance. But he doesn't mind, instead just straightening up his posture to make the adjustments for the lapels easier on the blond.]
Mm. I hope I can get along with whoever Ritsu ends up dating, someday. Though the thought makes me a little nervous...
Taking it easy
